My name is Sam Northern; thank you for viewing my library media education portfolio. I have five years of experience as a middle school English Language Arts teacher. Teaching in the classroom has given me the opportunity to integrate many library media resources and principles in instruction. ELA Common Core State Standards support library services by promoting the use of emerging technologies and the Internet to inspire inquiry-based learning. In 2012, I was a winner of the Kentucky Education Association’s Diversity Lesson Plan Contest. This ELA lesson empowered students to be critical thinkers, skillful researchers, and ethical users of information. Students’ assumed the role of an individual during a war in America’s history and were challenged to determine that person’s perspective by researching a variety of print and non-print materials.
In May, I will earn my Rank I with a Master of Science from WKU’s Library Media Education graduate program. I have also been selected by the program’s faculty as the recipient of the LME’s Graduate Student Award. During the course of my education, I designed and implemented an instructional unit and co-developed three projects to be published at the end of 2014 in CREaTe excellence: Cognitive complexity, Real-world learning, Engagement, and Technology integration. My most recent course for this degree includes a practicum experience that allowed me to apply library media education skills in instruction, technology, collaboration, and administration under the supervision of a trained media specialist.
Technology has always played a major role in my own education and in my role as a teacher. Even though I have been learning about and using technology since grade school, teaching is where I have learned the most about computers and software. I have been to many professional development events where I have learned about new computer functions and online tools for improving instruction. Thanks to professional developments and wonderful colleagues, I am familiar with a variety of Internet applications: Prezi, Edmodo, Glogster, Voki, Discovery Education tools, etc. Web tools such as these have had a tremendous impact on the engagement and achievement of my students.
